Introduction

Active Knowledge LLC and Cottonwood Classical Preparatory School, a New Mexico public charter school, have formed a partnership in the interest of nurturing healthy, socially responsible young citizens with the goal of combining classical classroom instruction with experiential learning through participation in a non-traditional sports athletic program.  Cottonwood Classical Preparatory School has selected four students to attend the International Baccalaureate World Conference in Corvallis, Oregon in August 2010.  One of these students, with his father and coach, will be cycling to the conference.  This journey has been called “HumanRace”.

HumanRace” will be a cross-curricular, multi-student endeavor to train, document, and finance a 1,500 mile bicycle ride from Albuquerque, NM to the International Baccalaureate Leadership Conference in Corvallis, OR with the intent of raising money to help finance the Cottonwood Classical athletic program.  This adventure will involve many members of the Cottonwood Classical staff and student body, along with the founders of Active Knowledge LLC.  To succeed, this team will advertise, solicit sponsorships, and raise money to support the goal and mission of this event.  Furthermore, the student body of Cottonwood Classical will be running a grassroots fundraising campaign to help raise additional funds in support of this cause.

Mission Statement: HumanRace

The journey to Corvallis will be an extraordinary opportunity for learning using the Humanitas tradition.   The journey begins with a school and community commitment to help raise money for the establishment and maintenance of a non-traditional athletic program, ending with a group consisting of coaches, parents, and students cycling together from Albuquerque, NM 1,500 miles to the International Baccalaureate Leadership Conference in Corvallis, OR.  Together, we will use collaboration and team work to train, document, and chronicle our journey all while demonstrating that community service and academics are an integral part of educating the whole child for the whole world.
